Xhaka scored winner as Arsenal qualified for the Europa League knockout stage

Arsenal defeated PSV Eindhoven by a slim margin at Emirates Stadium, and Granit Xhaka scored the game-winning goal to advance Arsenal to the next round of the Europa League.

After maintaining their perfect record, the outcome puts Mikel Arteta’s team five points ahead at the top of Group A, ensuring that they will, at the very least, advance to the playoff round.

If the Gunners win the rematch in the Netherlands next week, they will go directly to the round of 16 as group winners.

In the rescheduled game, Arsenal won for the eighth time in a row in all competitions, and they more than deserved it.

Arsenal’s best chances came from Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka, but the performance of PSV’s Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benitez and some sloppy finishing made for a tense evening.

To overcome the visitors’ resistance, Swiss international Xhaka headed a cross from Takehiro Tomiyasu low into the bottom left corner.
