Ulster wing Jacob Stockdale claims that his injury-related year on the sidelines was “very challenging,” His time away from the field has given him “a new respect” for playing the game.

Since suffering an ankle injury in the first game of the 2021–22 season, Stockdale hasn’t played in a competitive match until the United Rugby Championship (URC) season-opening victory against Connacht.

Being unable to play rugby, which I love to do, was upsetting to Stockdale.

“I now recognize how fortunate I am to play, without a doubt.

“I made an effort to engage in activities outside rugby.

“My wife was almost continually pregnant when I began my engineering degree, so it was beneficial for me to be around to support and aid her.

“I could once again concentrate on rugby after I started working out again following my operation.

“You start to miss it a lot after spending a year simply watching from the sidelines.

“I consider myself fortunate to have recovered from the injury, and the fact that it isn’t bothering me anymore is also perfect.

“Literally, all it takes to keep you off the field is one injury. As a result, I now absolutely appreciate things that I probably didn’t enjoy all that much before.”
