Turkey win in Montenegro to secure a place in the World Cup playoffs.
PODGORICA: Turkey booked a place in the World Cup playoffs as it rallied to beat Montenegro 2-1 on Tuesday to finish second in Group G behind the Netherlands automatic qualifiers and ahead of Norway.
The Dutch beat Norway 2-0 to lead the group with 23 points in 10 games ahead of Turkey with 21 points and Norway with 18.
Turkey got off to a terrible start when they conceded a goal in the fourth minute when Montenegro striker Fatos Beciraj volleyed the ball to goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir from inside the area.
Turkey leveled in the 22nd minute when striker Kerem Akturkoglu scored on a bicycle kick-off a superb cross from midfielder Abdulkadir Omur.
Turkey applied immense pressure in the second half, which paid off as 20-year-old forward Orkun Kokcu’s shot from outside the area left goalkeeper Matija Sarkic defenseless.
Montenegro finished fourth in the table with 12 points.
