Tottenham was denied a win in a thrilling final match against Sporting Lisbon, and they will need at least a draw at Marseille in their last Champions League group match to advance.

Spurs knew a win would ensure their position in the round of 16, but they struggled for considerable stretches until Harry Kane’s goal was disallowed for offside. Manager Antonio Conte was sent out in the subsequent turmoil.

Sporting punished Conte’s team for a poor first-half performance that drew loud jeers from the home crowd by taking the lead with a well-placed low shot in the 22nd minute of a tight match from former Spurs youngster Marcus Edwards.

Spurs significantly improved after the half, although they were thankful to goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for a critical stop from Sporting replacement Flavio Nazinho, who also missed a goal-bound attempt.

Ten minutes later, Rodrigo Bentancur rose to head home from a corner, allowing them to capitalize on their two narrow escapes. Then, in a frantic end, both teams had chances to win.

Kane believed he had won it with almost the final kick, but VAR disagreed.
