Spain overcame Portugal in Braga to advance the Nations League Finals thanks to a spectacular Alvaro Morata goal.
In the 88th minute, the ex-Chelsea striker scored from close range after Nico Williams headed the ball in his direction.
Portugal needed a point to progress and had opportunities to score, but Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Diogo Jota both missed.
In the championships in June, Spain will be joined by Croatia, Italy, and the Netherlands, who are anticipated to host every match.
Portugal, leading Group A2 heading into the evening, will be perplexed how they failed to secure a spot in the four-nation competition scheduled for next summer.
They were the superior side for most of the encounters in northern Portugal since they had won the inaugural tournament in 2018–19.
Jota received a great ball from Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United, who then gathered it. Jota attempted to score, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon made a superb one-handed save to stop him.
With Ronaldo having a shot blocked by Simon early in the second half and Fernandes hitting the side-netting, the home team continued to have the better chances.
Williams, an Athletic Bilbao substitute who made a difference for Spain, twice had shots blocked by Diogo Costa.
With only two minutes left, Williams’ header flew past the Portugal goalie, and Morata quickly hooked the ball into the top of the net from close range.
Spain, who finished second in the 2021 Nations League Finals, has a chance to win the competition in June.
