Iran arrests 450 in anti-hijab demonstrations

Iran arrests 450 in anti-hijab demonstrations: Following more than ten days of demonstrations in response to the death of a young Kurdish lady while under the morality policy, authorities in a region in northern Iran have detained 450 people, according to state media on Monday.

Since unrest initially started after Mahsa Amini’s death was reported on September 16, hundreds of protesters, reformist activists, and journalists have been detained during the mostly nighttime rallies around the nation.

Three days before, Amini, whose Kurdish first name was Jhina, arrested in Tehran for allegedly breaking the law on hijab head coverings and modest attire.

According to the head prosecutor of Mazandaran, Mohammad Karimi, 450 rioters have detained there throughout the recent unrest, according to the state news agency IRNA.

He said, “They have assaulted government buildings and destroyed public property in many districts of Mazandaran.”

According to local media, demonstrators were yelling anti-regime chants, and Karimi said that “foreign anti-revolutionary operatives” were in charge of them.

Authorities in the neighboring province of Guilan announced the arrest of 739 individuals on Saturday, including 60 women.

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the head of Iran’s judiciary, “emphasised the necessity for immediate punishment without mercy” against the main instigators of the “riots” on Sunday, according to the judiciary’s Mizan Online website.

Since the turmoil started, at least 41 individuals have perished, the majority of them demonstrators but also several security personnel from the Islamic Republic.

Images released by the Tasnim News Agency on Monday showed demonstrators in Qom, a revered Shiite city located about 150 kilometers (90 miles) south of Tehran.

According to Tasnim, security officials have distributed these pictures of “chief instigators” and asked locals to “identify them and tell the authorities.”
