Iga Swiatek beats Donna Vekic to win San Diego Open

Iga Swiatek, the world’s top player, defeated Donna Vekic in the San Diego Open final with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 to win her eighth championship of 2022.

Polish player Swiatek, who has won the US Open and the French Open this year, now has 64 victories.

Vekic, who had earlier in the day completed her semi-final match against American Danielle Collins despite a rain delay, competed with Swiatek but faltered late.

It was pretty close and took a while, according to Swiatek.

“We definitely felt the intensity. I wanted to play the last ball into the goal in the end.”

Swiatek defeated Vekic of Croatia in the sixth game, and he held twice more to win the first set.

In the second set, Vekic, who will move up to number 47 in the global rankings, broke her opponent with a crosscourt forehand to gain a 4-2 lead before twice holding her serve to tie the match.

After an hour and 47 minutes, Vekic double-faulted, and Swiatek swiftly gained the upper hand in the final. Swiatek then won the WTA 500 match.

According to Swiatek, “I wanted to go all in.”

I wanted to be more relaxed in my return games, not worry too much, utilize my instincts, and battle for every ball because I knew how great she could serve.
