Gerrard departs the Midlands club in 17th position, tied on points with Wolves in 18th place but ahead of their opponents in goals scored.
Harrison Reed gave the home team the lead by scoring with a powerful shot after Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez had deflected a corner into the midfielder’s path.
As Fulham controlled the first half, Andreas Pereira came close on two occasions, and Aleksandar Mitrovic had a far-post header saved off the line by Tyrone Mings.
Just after the hour mark, the night for Villa took a turn for the worst when Douglas Luiz was dismissed after the video assistant referee determined that he had headbutted Mitrovic after an off-the-ball dispute.
Mitrovic doubled the lead for the home team from the spot after Mitrovic’s shot hit Matty Cash in the arm.
The home team wasted no time using their numerical advantage. Martinez could block Mitrovic’s shot with both hands, but he was unsuccessful.
When Mings deflected Neeskens Kebano’s low cross into his net, the visitors’ agony was complete. Sections of the away end chanted, “Steven Gerrard, get out of our club,” in response to the goal.
